The Mansion House served as Joseph and Emma’s second home in Nauvoo, and they first moved into it on August 31, 1843. At first, Joseph let guests stay there free of charge, but it eventually became necessary for him to charge to keep up the house. Just as with the Red Brick Store, the Mansion House also served as a venue where several temple ordinances were performed before the Nauvoo Temple was finished.
It was in the fall of 1843, that Joseph and Emma met Jane Manning, a twenty-one year old black woman who had just traveled 800 miles on foot to see the prophet. Joseph and Emma let Jane live in the Mansion House with them and she worked as a servant, helping Emma run the house. At one point in time, Emma offered to adopt Jane as their daughter.
